Help!!! my parents refuse to give me my social security card!!! is this illegal, and how do i get a new one?!? |
okay, here goes....i am moved out of my house and live with my boyfriend and we room with a few of our friends. we're planning on getting an apartment, but i need my social security card AND birth certificate since it is subsidized housing. but they REFUSE to give them to me. they said they dont approve of what i'm doing and aren't going to give them to me. Isn't that illegal?! now i need to find out how to get a new card and birth certificate...i live in SC but i was born in Wisconsin...so I'm not sure as to how to get a new certificate. any help would be appreciated. THAnks MUCH!! Although I agree with wizjp on how to get your SS card, You NEVER under almost any circumstances sue you your parents... Yes they are being wrong, but to sue your parents is about as wrong as it gets unless you are physically harmed and you have NO OTHER CHOICE. YOu could get a lawyer and sue them for it; but it would be a whole lot easier to contact the Vital Records department on the state of WI website and order a duplicate birth certificate; and use that to get a duplicate SS card. go down to the local social security office and get one..you can even see what you need to apply for it online..doesnt matter what state you born in Go to the Social Security office and apply for 1 it's free and you'll receive it in less than 2 weeks....but you need ID...if you dont have you birth certificate go to town hall and request on there might be a small charge. This is an EASY solution. You can go to the dept of health and ask for a copy of your birth certificate. Even if you were born out of state, the procedure is the same except this will require a phone call or research the internet. The social security administration will issue a duplicate card as well. You can get your birth certificate for a small fee from the town offices of the town you were born in (make sure it's the "long form". As far as the social security card goes....you will not be able to get a copy of that. Maybe you could ask the apartment manager if you could provide some other documents?? I don't have my original SS card ( and havent for over 20 years and never had a problem. Even getting a passport didn't require my SS card. If you are so grownup to move out why do my taxes need to pay for you a place to live. You must apply to the department where such records are kept int he state where you were born. There may be some requirements becore they send you a birth certificate. This is a valuable document and with it anyone can steal your entire life. I don't think it's illegal as much as just mean. I work with a woman who's doing the same thing to her daughter...her reasoning is that she paid for the birth certificate and was the one who ordered the card...if her daughter wanted copies she should get her own! Withholding your birth certificate and SS card, like I said, isn't illegal, don't they realize that you need these items for official items, like proof of citizenship, to get a driver's license, and for employment? |
