Where does Social Security Benefits go when you die?

My father died a month ago, and none of his children qualify for his benefits. After the lady told me that on the phone, I asked her where does his money go, she said, "I dont know, back to the Government I guess." then said, "Ma'am call your congressmen if you need to" WOWOW... so where does that money go... did my dad just donate ten of thousands of dollar to Uncle Sam?? What the Hell?!?!

First off, sorry to hear about your dad. Since none of your brothers or sisters qualify, your mother would be entitled to his
SSI Benefits when she is 62, providing that she is still living, otherwise the Government just uses the money to pay others that are collecting.

My oldest brother passed away and his wife can not get any of his social security until she turns 62, or 7 years from now.

Unfortunately, if there is no surviving spouse or qualified children, your dad donated his money.

To the spouse if one exists otherwise to the government, what else is new?

it's hardly a benefit, but...........ahhh who cares it's like $12 or something.

They go back into the social security system and go to people whose benefits have run out or been exhausted.

If there is a living spouse, then they would get it. Otherwise, it goes back in the the fund.

My husband died late in 2004.

I was told that I could NOT draw his SS UNLESS:

A. I'm disabled (which I am) AND 50 years old, (which I am not, yet, but ;) close now).

B. OR 60 years old. Period.

That means that both my Husband's and your Father's SS when back into the "pot", so to speak.

My condolences for your loss.
