What sort of help can an elderly couple on Social Security and Medicare get living in Texas?

My parents live in Texas, and since they do not make any other money other than Social Security, the stimulis package won't even help them. So tell me what other options does a couple have living in the DFW Metroplex. They are so embarassed by having to maybe ask for help, and I do not want them to be so I am asking around.

There aren't any meals on wheels, I wish there were. When I last checked on them at my mom's request, they said there wasn't anyone to do it in our area.

There are many Federal and State programs to assist such as food stamps etc. but they will have to apply for obtain them. Check with the local county government for a list that they would qualify for.

Since the elderly vote religiously they will cater to their needs over many other groups.

Meals on Wheels
Local churches- offer food, rent, utilities assistance. Call and ask them.

Meals on wheels.
Government food subsidies.
Almost every drug company (ya know the ones everyone says are so "evil") have drug subsidy programs to help seniors get lost cost or free medications.
I highly recommend contacting you local area on aging ombudsman and seeing about getting someone out to speak to them -- there are many programs they can help them with and resources they can be directed to.

Call your local department on Aging. Just dial 311 in DFW and ask to be put through to the Department of Aging. They can tell you a list of progams and options.

You can also look up Dallas/Fort Worth Department of Aging online. Or check for local services on AGIS.com
