You may get a claim for additional tax from the IRS and you will have the burden of proof that you did not earn the money. Normally this is easy: you have filed a police complaint, or the names and SSAN don't match, or the city of employment is far away and you can show you were home.

If for some reason there is no discrepancy report -- common where the SSAN in question is that of an infant or child or the total wages paid on the account are below filing threshold or for some other reason the IRS does not pursue the matter -- eventually the account holder may get a higher benefit because the credit will never have been removed from the account. And by the time s/he reaches age 65-68 and can claim, the SSA no longer has the means to research and remove the credit.

Indeed, one reason for the "nanny tax" imbroglio was that many domestics were not getting their wages reported on form 940 or by any other method, and when they reached retirement age and claimed a pension, the SSA would in fact try to reconstruct their employment history and pursue long-forgotten obligations of former employees. Unless the domestic had gone back to Mexico, in which case (in the absence of a totalization agreement with Mexico) she might get nothing.

you will not get extra money and you might even have to pay unless you can get it all worked out and if you think it has been used you better call the three credit places to report (red flag) your #, cuz it could have even been used to get stuff like credit cards and cash advances. so get it reported asap!! good luck

Social security will say as long as a police report was filed you will not have to pay any taxes or get any extra money. Contact the CBRs and red flag it

Call SS they will send you a form to fill out to help you prove your SS# was used illegal. Then you will not be responsible for anything other than your own. My son had to do this. Good luck
