Apartment rent question: New owners just bought the property, want to raise the rent?

But I have a lease I signed with previous owners good until June of 2007. I don't have to sign this new lease, do I? I am bound only by the first contract, right? Anybody? This new owner is a real jerk. They are called Realty World or something. The lady showed up at my door with eviction papers b/c the former landlady tried to run off with my last check. She tried to say she had sent me a letter. I asked, Did you send it return receipt? She seemed stunned. Am I in the right here?

This totally depends on the state and most likely county and/or town that you are in - just try to type that in the search bar and your state - I just did and found a lot of info about it for a lot of states.. just do not know where you are living.

I JUST saw this exact kind of case on the People's Court - which is based on real law - NY law at least and they CANNOT raise your rent - tell them no and take them to court if need be or tell her to take you to court. I know this one case was in Sea Cliff NY. I am not sure where you are but don't laugh at the People's Court thing - you are good until June of 2007 - they can't raise it or evict you because you have a lease. I know after that ends, you would have to sign one or go month to month at whatever rate they want to charge of course - but what are her BS grounds for eviction?? She needs to be able to prove you violated the lease in some way and in most towns, tenants have more rights than landlords and it takes landlords months and months to get someone out - for legit reasons so this just does not hold water - tell her to take you to court - she will lose.

Contact your town hall and tell them this - find out who is in charge of the landlord/tenant disputes or laws in your town - and the townhall would know this. I would go down there - just check your yellow pages to see where they are or call info if you do not already know..

That stinks.. sorry ~ what is the matter with people? Yes - and she needs some proof that you received that letter she claims to have sent you. Tell her to take you to court - that will shut her up.

Lawyers normally consult with you for free so call around and see if one can help you with rent/real estate and legalities of this. Good luck!

The rent doesnt affect you until your lease is up

Contact your local agency, not sure who it is or where you live. There are consumer protection agencies in every state. They regulate Landlord tenant laws.

The contract should endure, however the lease may have an escape clause. Act quickly, before you are in too deep and so you have time to mve if you have to.
Good luck!

I lease a place in Washington State, andI try to be very fir, but I have had my share of really bad landlords.

Good Luck

I don't think that you have to sign the new lease, but if you don't then I think they can evict you. When the old owners sold the place, the new owners can change the lease if they want. You can move if you want, and will not be breaking any lease. You might talk to a lawyer about it.

GO TO THE COURT AND PAY THE RENT THERE EVERY MONTH UNTILL YOUR LEASE FINISH

your lease is a contract. somewhre in there it should state that in the event of new ownership the said agreement stands. look over your original lease.
