Apartment rent question: New owners just bought the property, want to raise the rent? |
But I have a lease I signed with previous owners good until June of 2007. I don't have to sign this new lease, do I? I am bound only by the first contract, right? Anybody? This new owner is a real jerk. They are called Realty World or something. The lady showed up at my door with eviction papers b/c the former landlady tried to run off with my last check. She tried to say she had sent me a letter. I asked, Did you send it return receipt? She seemed stunned. Am I in the right here? This totally depends on the state and most likely county and/or town that you are in - just try to type that in the search bar and your state - I just did and found a lot of info about it for a lot of states.. just do not know where you are living. The rent doesnt affect you until your lease is up Contact your local agency, not sure who it is or where you live. There are consumer protection agencies in every state. They regulate Landlord tenant laws. I don't think that you have to sign the new lease, but if you don't then I think they can evict you. When the old owners sold the place, the new owners can change the lease if they want. You can move if you want, and will not be breaking any lease. You might talk to a lawyer about it. GO TO THE COURT AND PAY THE RENT THERE EVERY MONTH UNTILL YOUR LEASE FINISH your lease is a contract. somewhre in there it should state that in the event of new ownership the said agreement stands. look over your original lease. |
