How do you become a probate researcher?

Have just seen a programme, and it looks really interesting work.

The programme was trying to trace any heir's before the money went to the government. I am in the U.K.

Technically you do not need any expertise to find people who have died intestate but I would imagine a great deal of experience is useful.

The lists of unclaimed estates are public - see perhaps the crown office website - the problem is companies will be using these lists to track down relatives of the deceased's and then claim some sort of commission for their services. This means an amateur would be up against people with extensive resources in tracking people down.

If of course you wanted to work for one of these companies it's quite probable that genealogical experience is vital and knowledge of rules of intestacy or finance may be required.

yeah id like to know how to do that i been looking in to it there is a list you can get hold of but i cant find it on the government site Report Abuse

Are you talking about the end of this that involves finding relatives? I've done genealogy for 25+ years, so maybe that is what you are talking about. It also is of value to know what kinds of sources would be used by private investigators.. since the records of family connections are different from those normally used by living people.
Knowing how to prove people's relatives is a matter of experience in genealogy.

Here is another site, which focuses more on the legal requirements (it may be for Washington state, so it is more for general topics).
If you will drop me a note.. I don't know your location, but if you are in the UK, I have contact with a lady there, who is presently enrolled in a course that deals with this.
