Can an employer ask you to put away a medicine bag worn in observance of the native american culture? |
I Just married a Native American and she gave me a medicine bag to wear around my neck. I am honored by her gift and respect the culture that my wife so loves. I had been asked to put the bag out of site while I am my workplace. Our employee handbook does not touch on this subject and I do not know if this can be legally imposed. An employer could impose this rule if: Would it be against her culture if you were to wear it tucked under your shirt during work hours? At that point you should request that ALL religious jewelry be banned. As it is the same as wearing a crucifix for xtians. I would bet they can. Check with an attorney |
