What are the steps i need to take to be able to live on my own as a minor? |
My parents think its a good idea to have practice living on my own before I move to another state to attend college. This way, if anything happens during the year before college, I will be able to fall back on them. My boyfriend(22) and I are hoping to move in together. We already found a high class apartment, in a good neighborhood, and a good location considering our job locations etc. However, me being a minor(only 17) my name cannot be put on the lease, and I wont be able to move in with him unless my name is on the lease. I live in the state of Idaho, and getting emancipated here is almost impossible (i would either have to be pregnant, or join the military). Therefore we were thinking about doing a guardianship transfer (my parents making him my legal guardian until I turn 18). However, that is also a long process requiring lots of paperwork, time, and court dates. Does anybody have any advice for my situation?? by the way, i already have a steady job(plan on getting a second one) and pay for everything i need myself. my parents only provide shelter. with all of this, i still manage to keep strait A's at school, and stay out of trouble. Why are your parents selling you down the river? That's just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. First of all, it's nuts that you're with a 22 year old. Second, if he's all grown up and mature, why does need to fall back on your parents if you fall back on him? Think about how twisted it is that you are so young they need to do a guardian transfer so he can be your daddy? sorry, think you answered your own question. legal guardian transfer and a lot of paperwork is the only way. i am a foreigner and have discoverd through numerous visa and passport problems that everything in america requires a ton of paperwork. sorry, but if the point of moving out is to get practice in real life, then the work and paperwork are totally a part of it. Emancipation of minors is a legal mechanism by which a child is freed from control by their parent(s)/guardian(s), and the parent(s)/guardian(s) is/are freed from any and all responsibility toward the child. Until an emancipation is granted by a court, a minor is still subject to the rules of their parent(s)/guardian(s). My advice for your situation is ... why are you and your parents pressing so hard to do something that's ... "out of the ordinary"? The difficulty with emancipation is because society has decided you are too young. So, rather than just assuming I gave you the wrong or the undesired answer, consider my advice to not do it. Becoming your boyfriend's ward is the dumbest idea I've heard (today), and no court would allow it anyway. You might not like it, but this is a good answer. You're only 17 and your boyfriend is 22? Man... it's times like these I wish Y!A revealed IP addresses... I'd report you in an instant, man I love screwing up peoples lives. Bf is 22 and you are 17? isn't that statutory rape if you have sex? Go to juvenile court and get an attorney to file a motion for emancipation.Or you could do it yourself( personally though I'd use an attorney) go to court and if you have grounds for separation from your family. Yup it is a lot of paperwork. i suggest you wait till you are 18, i mean if you are already 17, how long can it be? how long till you turn 18? |
