If I got drafted into the military, would I lose my house?

I bought a house, 2 years ago. I am now 20 years old, almost 21. Of course, I don't fully own it yet, I have a mortgage that I pay every month. So if I got drafted into the military, I would lose it, right?

Not necessarily. You can take advantage of your rights under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), which was passed in 2003 [see Link 1, 搂533]. If your annual income is considerably reduced, you can apply in writing to the mortagee for an adjustment to your mortgage for the period you are on active duty plus 90 days. A court can stay foreclosure proceedings and/or adjust the mortgage payment.
See Link 2 for more information about specific examples. Also note, it would be up to you to protect your rights.
My cousin was deployed to Afghanistan and his family had to make use of this act. The federal government will do its best to look out for the interests of active duty service members and veterans.

yes, if you got drafted you would lose your house. You would also see the start of World War 3 and the end of civilization as we know it, so your house would be the last thing on your mind.

There is less than zero percent chance of you being drafted in the next 10 years, and by then you'll be too old anyway. The chance of you seeing a draft in your lifetime is about .00000000000001 percent. IT WILL NOT HAPPEN!

You might.
I know this thru a friend whose son is in Iraq.
They had all sorts of problems with renting out his house,
making sure his dog was taken care of, filing taxes, all that stuff. Do not assume the military will ever consider you anything more than grist for the mill.
And if there is a draft, I will stand in the doorway with a gun and shoot anyone who tries to take my son.
Just putting it out there.

Well, they would only have a draft if McCain got elected, and started the war he wants against Iran.

You would get paid though. Between getting shot at, while you guard the streets of Tehran, you could just send your government check home to make the house payment.

No, you still get paid while you are in the military. You could even rent it out for extra money while you were away. AND, there is no draft at the present time, so don't worry so much.

If they started the draft(which I don't see on the horizon) they would probably included protections for people in your situation.

You may not have noticed, but the draft ended in 1975. So I'm going to say that the chances of you getting drafted are pretty slim.

Why would you lose it? No.... just make sure the house payment is made every month.

How did you get drafted? There hasn't been a draft in over 30 years.

First... we need a draft.....

Second, you do get paid while in the military, so why can't you pay your bills??
