Are men required to shave prior to incarceration?

If someone, like one of the guys from ZZ Top, was sent to prison, would they require their beard to be shaved?

Just curious if it was similar to the military.

Depending on the state.. for example according to Tennessee law forcible cutting or trimming of hair shall not be done except upon orders of a physician due to health reasons. Now Ohio law states that Forced haircuts shall only be given if the inmate is issued a conduct report and the rules infraction board determines that the hairstyle or hair length is contrary to this rule and that the inmate has not been given an exemption from the grooming restrictions

No, however, they are not really allowed to change their appearance. So, for example a bearded man that entered prison would be photographed and an id would be made with him with a beard. If he shaved off his beard he would have to get a new id made with him clean shaven.

The only exceptions that I know of might be certain prison jobs may require you to be clean shaven.

I had a beard when I entered prison and was allowed to remove it. I was not issued with another ID card and remained clean shaven till I came out when I grew another beard. I have since shaved it off and don't think I'll be growing it again.

I believe they are required to shave every day in prison. I do know that jail does let you grow a beard. Depending on the jurisdiction you're in.

no
