Legal Resident of What State and in the Military?

If you are in the military and in training and moving from state to state, what state are you a legal resident of? Is it where you lived before you joined the service or where you have a driver's license from?

You are a resident of the state you joined in, you can if you wish renew your drivers licence in the state you are stationed in which would change your residence.

But this is not necessary. Most states will allow you to renew your licence as they expire. You will also need a permanet address, such as your parents or family.

Whatever address you use on you W-4 for tax purposes, whatever your driver's license says you are from, where you call home.

Normally, you need to be a resident of a State to obtain a drivers license. If you are in the military, you remain a "resident" of the State you lived in when you joined. This is how you vote absentee in elections.

That is up to you to some degree. If you are in the military, you may choose always to stay a resident of your home state or take up residency in the state you are stationed in.

When I was in, I kept my Kansas residency and was even stationed there at Ft Riley part of that time. But I was only in 3 years.

My brother was in 27 years and was a resident of various states over that time.

If you are in the military your out of state plates and license are valid anywhere as long as they are current.

after buying a car in TX, I had a KS license and TX plates for about a year and I was legal.

You are a legal resident of your home state.
You are temporary legal residents of the state that you are in when in the military.
