Why does the government allow assault rifles and shotguns to be sold? I understand handguns but why the others

I don't think people should be allowed to own assault rifles,snipers, and shotguns because those are just mean to fully kill. A standard handgun is ok but why sell military class weapons?

Why should we be less capably armed than the cops?
I can't hit a duck worth a damn without a shotgun...

People keep quoting the 2nd Amendment - with reason: it allows us [ the People] to protect and defend ourselves - it has NOTHING to do with hunting.

There is no difference between a citizen owning a handgun and a citizen owning a shoulder-fired tactical nuclear weapon.

Hunters use long guns like shotguns, rifles, etc. So do target and competitive shooters.

Automatic weapons are few and far between because they must be licensed and the costs are high and the restrictions on who can own them severe.
Most of the autmatic weapons used in crimes are used by people who are not licensed to own them and no matter what the laws say, those people, criminals, would have them.
Comtrary to what you say I see little reason for handguns in the public domain except for target shooting or self defense..
