I am filing a N.C. Pro Se Custody and Visitation any info would be useful...?

I am attempting to fill out the paperwork...
I am curious to know what would happen if the other parent is stubborn and won't agree to any terms...do we then have to take it to court and have a attorney?
Are there any steps that can be taken to ensure ruling in your favor....like evidence or things that should be taken to mediation or court? (letters from people regarding your character things of that nature)?
