What case yielded the highest monetary award in legal malpractice to date?

overlawyered.com might be a good place to look for info like this.

The award depends on the damages suffered. One case is not like another.

In a case where the lawyer sues the wrong person, or sues too late, and the mistake cannot be corrected, a person can be awarded millions. But they have to show that they would have won their case, if not for the lawyers actions/inactions. That is usually pretty tough to prove.

Also, where a problem can be corrected by additional appropriate action, there won't be a big malpractice award. For example, in a child custody case, the court retains jurisdiction until the child is grown. So the "loser" can appeal, refile for changed circumstances, etc. A bad lawyer is not necessarily the end of the case.

In other cases, where clients are dissatisified with the results, there may be no lawsuit at all. Losing a case does not mean a lawyer has committed malpractice or is even a poor lawyer. Sometimes, the law is not on your side.
