Why are professional ethics so important in journalism and the legal world?

I actually want to compare, not contrast, the importance of professional ethics in journalism and for lawyers.

Lawyers are held to a code of ethics by law (not that they necessarily follow it). Whereas with journalists it's more like a suggested set of guidelines. These days it's very rare to find any kind of ethics in Journalism.

The three (3) most important things with respect to journalism are 1) accuracy, 2) accuracy, and 3) accuracy. The fourth thing is, in my opinion, sadly missing in this day and age and that thing is ethics.

An attorney is not an ethics teacher, s/he practices law. However, they have rules including ethical procedures which, if they violate, could lead to disbarment.

Therefore, an attorney who violates certain ethical codes is subject to severe repercussions a journalist isn't, usually, subject to.
