My ex bf beat me up and I want to put a restraining order on him...?

We are in a lease together but I don't live in the apt anymore w/him. I'm paying rent at two places and he is trying to find someone to move in. On Friday night he beat the hell out of me when i went over there. Can i put a restraining order on him but still go the the apartment (with a friend this time) to make sure nobody has moved in so he can't collect money for rent that i'm paying from someone else? I'm really not sure what to do because I don't want to pay rent to my landlord and if he gets someone to move in and doesn't tell me and keeps the money. If you have a restraining order is it both ways or just one way?

I agree with Green Dragon. Forget the restraining order--have him arrested. When I worked in the court system in my state, the last job I did there was processing Petitions and Orders for Protection from Abuse (a/k/a restraining order). I had a sign behind my desk that read: "A Protection Order is a piece of paper, it does not stop a gun, knife or fist." That is true, no matter where you live.

First of all I'm glad that you were able to seek for help!!! Now what you could do is go to the landlord with the restraining order and police report if you have one and just be totally honest with them. Usually they will understand your situation and allow to get out of the lease. At most, you will not be able to get any form of the security deposit back. If that does not work go above the apartment complex and talk to their corp. office. Good Luck and stay safe!!!!

yeah you can but look up what you're state laws are first because you can sue him for the money for the apartment thing and two, you might be able to put his @zz in jail. good luck with winning this and i hope his pee-a-boo falls off!

Forget the restraining order. You should have him arrested. He has no right to hit you. You also shouldn't pay another nickel on the apartment he's living in.

Do it ASAP. Call the Police, many State Laws clearly instructs the police to arrest a spouse who physically abuse or pose a danger to your health .
Do it right away, get the guy out of there now

Just call the police and talk to them, they can tell you more about what your responsibilities and options are.

go to the cop shop and ask these questions that way you get the correct info. every state is different .when you go back to apt take cops with u!!

To begin with, you should have called the cops immediately. I don't know if you still can or not, but I would if I were you. Second, you should be able to get out of that lease by talking to your landlord or giving written notice. Why give your ex the satisfaction. Jerk the rug out from under him. And third, I don't think you can get a restraining order and then expect to be able to go near him. Call a Sheriff and get an escort if you have to, or make arrangements to go there when he's not there, or you could get into trouble.
