Can i get in trouble for hiring illegal aliens to remodel my kitchen? |
We are getting our kitchen remodeled and we live in south TX...there are lots of illegal mexicans around. Well we have a friends who knows some mexicans who fix homes, remodel etc... In addition to the others' comments, if you use anyone, legal or not, who is not licensed, then you have no come back if the work goes wrong and they will not have any insurance. Also, you do not know who these people are - criminals etc. that you are letting in your home. This is a big problem around the country. There's no law that says you have to verify a private contractor's citizenship or personal records in order to hire them for performing temporary manual labor. Otherwise, you could potentially get in trouble for paying some kid to shovel snow off your walkway without having him first fill out a bunch of forms. If you're hiring illegals as employees for your business, however, that would be pretty risky because you would have to verify their social security number and tax information for workman's compensation, tax collection, and such. You Get What You Pay For! Yes you can get in trouble, under the same laws that make it illegal to hire "nannies" and household help without proper documentation and tax reporting. It's not illegal, but you should be ashamed of yourself for even considering it. It's because of people like you giving them work that they even come here! Hide your valuables. |
