Do I have to pay union dues/fees?

I don't support our currently labor union (SEIU) in the my work place. I don't agree their political causes and think they are very corrupted. I have been avoiding pay union dues. I just received their letter threatening me to be fired from work if dues/fees not paid. Are they legally to do that? I thought there is a federal law that prohibits labor unions force worker to join. How can I ever not pay dues, still work at the same company, and have the union off my back? thank you!

Yes, you are required to pay. I work for the State and I did NOT want to pay union dues nor did I sign up for it. However, everytime I rec. my paycheck, they were taking money out. I asked my HR department and they said it does not matter if I want it or not, it was a requirement that I pay.

Stinks, but, in the long run, you never know when they may help you out!

If you object to union dues on moral grounds, then you can have your dues sent to a non profit organization that supports your moral views.

It is called "fair share", so named because you still enjoy the benefits and pay obtained by collective bargaining financed by the other employees, so you should have to pay your "fair share".

Keep in mind, moral grounds have to be something like religious belief, it can't be because you think unions are corrupt.

The union will most likely allow you to make payments until you catch up. They certainly won't get the back dues owed if you get fired.

You can be fired! You work at a Union shop and get all the Union benefits. You pay dues or find another job.
