Why not make prisoners do some work?

Why can't we make prisoners do some work. Take Statesville for example, our statesville has acres of land just sitting there. Why don't they have the prisoners grow a garden, it would help provide fresh food for them to eat and save the state money because they would not have to buy so much food. Why can't we have the prisoners do some of the repairs needed to keep our prisons and jails running? It would save money on labor. Why should they be able to sit around all day while we are out working our butts off to make ends meet, all the while supporting them as well. Some people don't even mind going to jail to them it's three hots and a cot(bed). It costs us money to keep them alive, fed, with a roof over head cloths on there back and even some entertainment. They should have to work off the debt they are making. If they were forced to do some work it might do them some good. It could be a part of "rehab". Maybe they could learn something and have a chance when they get out. It would save

That way we could spend our tax money on better things. Things that can really be fixed.

You just hit the nail on the head with the current penal system and how the liberals today are running it.

Until the mid 70's, we had what was called "Crime and Punishment". This meant that when a man was convicted of a felony crime and sent to prison, he was kicked off the face of the planet. He had NO rights and either did what he was told or suffered the consequences of his poor judgment at the hands of the Correctional staff.
Life was difficult and harsh. It literally forced a man to rethink what he did and give him resolve not to reoffend when he was done with his sentence.

Starting around 1973, the liberals starting to seriously take over and instituted "Corrections and Rehabilitation". The prison factories disappeared. Gun towers were removed (they were considered too "intimidating". Inmates (not cons, as they were known before, since this is now considered a derogatory term) now sit around working out, sitting in the legal library (that we are mandated to maintain at taxpayer's expense) looking for a loophole to get them out of prison (Not that anyone ever said they were innocent, but looking for a legal mistake to overturn their sentence). Correctional staff has to be professional and politically correct at every single moment but at the same time is subjected to every type of verbal abuse from the inmates ( the official stand from above is that inmates are expected to be inmates and be abusive, but we are supposed to be professionals and cannot react to this).

The public burden is skyrocketing while we are supplying a daycare center with razor wire around it with absolutely no incentive for an inmate NOT to reoffend and return.

In the old system, the recidivism rate was 15%. Life was BAD and the offender did not want to return. Under our new and progressive system, recidivism is officially listed at 64% but the actual numbers are running 85% and the liberals are crowing "Look,,,,we are saving some of them from coming back".

So yes, if you took a poll within the system itself, you would be amazed at how many Correctional staff would agree with you. Bring back the work factories on grounds, make them work and sweat all day and be grateful to get back to their cell and rest. Reduce the public burden and it will also make better citizens returning to society that will not reoffend.

I hope this helps and you can find it useful

Heck, why not also hire them out at cheap rates, and under cut the immigrant/migrant workers, and mechanics , and other low paid workers even more, just what is needed, even more desperate unemployed on our streets, worldwide, and company bankruptcies, who needs these companies any way ?, why do we need to pay so much for all of this, we could even undercut the chinese as well, as our own homegrown businesses, think how good it would feel to buy a DVD made at cents on the dollar, and their is always welfare for those who lose their jobs, after all it's what taxes are for, and they never had it so good, no really .

The prisoners are costing us billions of dollars a year any way you go. Yeah, A T, I guess it is better for the prisoners to have a free roof over their heads, 3 hot meals a day, free cable t.v. and a free education at the cost of all the taxpayers who are working. They live better than some of us out here in the real world. And they call that punishment?? Why shouldn't they work out in the fields picking crops, the farmers complain that they can't afford to pay anyone but immigrants to do it, so make the prisoners do it for free to pay off their debt to society, or at least as a way to pay tax payers back for their housing and food costs.
