Labor violation in Blockbuster?

IMPORTANT: I live and work in Washington state.

I've worked for Blockbuster Video for about two years. Just recently, I got promoted to shift lead. It seems to be a common conception that any form of manager does not get breaks. Night shifts are usually about five hours, and I have a customer service representative with me so I'm able to leave the front and take a short break. My issues are with weekday mornings and weekend nights. They've cut our labor demand severely, so any manager that works in the morning on weekdays is stuck for eight to nine hours by themselves. It is, to my knowledge, against Blockbuster standard operating procedure to EVER lock the store doors during operating hours. Therefore, we can't take breaks, and we can't even go to the bathroom. Weekend nights we have service representatives, but it's often so busy that it's difficult to sit for longer than about five minutes without being called to the front.

I would like to know what my rights are as an employee.

Thank you Mr. Ignorant. I shouldn't have to find a new job just because Blockbuster is breaking labor laws. Obviously you know nothing about the world. Shoo.

Unless you signed a waiver of your breaks, you are entitled to your breaks under Washington state law. I once worked in a convenience store where I had to sign an actual waiver that said I would not take my lunch break because at times, there was only one person working and it's not like I could leave the till unmanned.

Check into your workplace rights with regards to breaks (WA has great websites for info!) at the link below and I believe you can make an anonymous complaint to L&I. Good luck!

you have the right to quit and find another job...no one is making you stay there
