Do you think it's right for corporations to profit from prison labor? |
I've read that this is one reason why new prisons are being built. This may be the new form of slave labor because prisoners are paid way below minimum wage. I also heard that in fifty years there will be more people in prison than on the outside. I bet those corporations involved would enjoy this better than outsourcing jobs to oversees and while money is changin' hands from corporation to politician I can guarantee that police quotas are getting bigger, innocent people are being railroaded into prison, and prison sentences are getting stiffer and stiffer. I definitely have an issue with private interests profiting from prison labour. And my reason for that is that it is a conflict of interest. I explain... Private companies might start out gaining profit from that labour with the best interest in the world, but history has shown us that human nature tends to be greedy. Therefore, once there is a potential to make more profits, they are no gonna put a voluntary cap to the amount of cash they can get out of it, whether it is for ethical or humane reasons. Hence, they will lobby gvnts to build more prisons and put more people to jail in order to increase their manpower. I think it is okay for governmental agencies to profit from prison labor to recoup some of the costs of their confinement, but I do not support the idea of private businesses profiting. yes Does anyone know how much it costs any society to police, try and convict someone? So you think that the really innocent people -- the taxpayers -- should pay extra taxes so that rapists and burglars will not have to work in jail? Hey hq3, their not working off their debt to society if big business is benefiting. The benefits need to go to society as a whole. Absolutely. Look at a picture of a nazi death camp and compare it to American pictures of prisons. |
