Are your juvenile records automatically sealed when you turn 18? |
Im asking this from california. I have heard both that you must go and ask to get them removed, and that they are automatically erase since you are no longer a juvenile. Not all juvenile records can be sealed, and when they can be it is not automatic, and if the juvenile court took jurisdiction it is not available until five years after the court ended jurisdiction. A petition for sealing must be filed in the juvenile court under Welfare and Institutions Code section 781. It is not safe to assume your record will be quashed, even if it is general practice. The only way to be sure, even if California law states that it will happen, is to go to the local police station in person and verify. not in California Consult a lawyer. Don't put your legal future in our hands. We don't know squat about the law, even if we think we do. |
