What is life like in a Juvenile Detention Center?

What are the everyday activities? How are the sleeping conditions? How is the food and people?

I worked for 30years for the California Youth Authority before I retired. The sleeping conditions are two people in a 5ftx9ft cell. The food is as good or bad as the cooks skill at preparing it. The worst part is that things in jail are exactly the opposite of normal socieity in that bucause the people in jail have failed in all aspects of their lives, School,Families,Criminal Activity and as a result they have two choices 1. To admitt that they are total failures or 2. Too constantly proove how tough they are at the expence of other people in the jail. This means that the scared and the weak are often raped and sometimes even gang raped by the stronger inmates. They are also forced too do the gang members dirty work and get in the trouble that comes with that. Their are regular stabbings which are mainly due too drug control by the gangs within the jail. There are suicides, assaults, and a verity of other offences on a regular basis due too the tremendous pressures placed on the inmates by other inmates. In other words it is a\lving helll for anyone who has an ounce of compassion for anyone and everyone. We have morals that say if it is bad then don't do it but inmates have a philospy of do it too them before they do it too you. I have been told hundreds of times that it was the victims fault that they were robbed and killed because they should not have let me know that they had so much money. Sometimes this happens even when the criminal demands the money and the victim has no choice because of a weapon being involved. But too have even an ounce of compassion means that they have too face their life of failures. When this happens they generally hit rock bottom and go through severe depression as they have too face the fact that they are failures. Too sum it up life in jail is a living hell.

Over here where i live, the Juvey Center isnt that bad. I had a friend who would get out, and that same day, would do something to go back. His reasoning was "Good food, warm comfy bed, and good people". He enjoyed it. From what i recall him telling me, he had plenty of outdoor time and used to play football, soccer, and lacrosse. I would visit him every Monday and thursday after his schooling. It really wasnt that bad. I still wouldnt recommend it, but if you have to go to a Juvey Center, this one would be the one to go to. The correctional officers are really kind and understanding. They are usually in a very good mood and they have never used physical punishment. They aim to please.

This is virtually impossible to answer as every juvenile facility is different. Some counties have a lot of money and therefore their facilities may be in better repair and the food they serve might be better.

From my experience as a JPO in a large county in Texas the juvenile facility was new. There were two inmates per cell. Food was hot, but not good. Monday - Friday, woke up, ate breakfast and then went to school. Ate lunch, back to school. School ends at about 3:00 pm, return to cell. Eat dinner. Lights out at around 8:00 pm. Saturday's and Sundays were visitation days, not much to do. If you were good enough you might get to watch tv.
