Should Juveniles be sentenced as adults?

Im doing a speech on this topic anybody know where i can get info on this

http://www.jcpr.org/wpfiles/Steinberg_br...

In my opinion it's all about the severity of the crime,i remember at UMD there was 2 friends and a brother 16,17,and 13 and all of them got charged as adults for the million something in damages they caused.

sometimes

We do it in CA. It's a disaster. They get raped and trained to be the worse kinds of criminals in the penitentiary and their young enough so when they get out the commit the most heinous of crimes. It's a terrible idea unless you're putting them in for life.

Search under "Juveniles in adult prisons" There's a study at the URL below.

Personally, I think if you are "adult" enough to commit the crime, you need to be tried as an adult.

My opinions aside, have you tried typing your subject into the search field of Yahoo or Google? It will pop up tons of websites and forums that can give you a good basis for the argument for and against the subject.

Also, if you have a few weeks to do the speech, I'm sure there are books at the library dedicated to this subject.

Yes, if it can be demonstrated that their offense was premeditated, malicious, and that their level of maturity was sufficient to allow them to fully understand the wrongfulness of their actions.

To "HAy" below:
If there was some objective way to determine whether a minor is mature and responsible enough to handle drinking, I'd be all for it (I'm sure there are some out there). But unlike with determining a minor's level of responsibility for a crime, there is no practical way to make such an exception on an individual basis for liquor. What is a kid gonna do, try to petition a judge and convince him that he's better able to handle booze than his peers so he should be allowed to drink under 21? Like that's going to work... ;-)

To me I dont think its right that teens can legally be tried for murder as an "adult" when they are 18 but they cant buy beer??? To me this seems extremely inconsistant. Why the age difference? We can be tried as an adult, we can gamble, we can smoke etc but we cant drink. Now I'm not for going out and getting drunk by what makes one thing ok while another is not? To answer your real question no i dont think juvies should be tried as adults because in all honesty we dnt have the experience and knowledge that only age can give a person.

maybe just maybe if the parents could discipline there children without fear of being arrested we wouldn't need to worry about trying them as adults
