What is the difference between a trademark, copyright, a patent and design registration?

and if you could tell me Why should I should try to protect your original ideas? Focus the answer around Intellectual Property Issues鈥?

Trademark - a mark used in trade to identify your products as having been produced with your authority.

Patent - protection for a physical invention or process.

Copyright - The right to control the use and distribution of your original thoughts fixed in a perceptable form.

The Burger King has a copyright on the schematics for Burger King's flame broiling machine. It has a trademark on the little Burger King logo in the corner of the schematic. And it has a patent on the machine that one can build using the schematics.
