Can a hospital still send me a bill 11 months after services rendared?

I was treated in July of 2007. I just received a bill dated June 18, 2008 for over $1,600.00! The due date is July 4th 2008. Is this legal for them to send me such an outrageous bill almost a year after the fact? I had no idea we owed any money at all. I thought our insurance covered it.

They sure can. However, if it is too late for your to file the bill with your insurance company, you have a good argument for the hospital to reduce the bill by the amount the insurer would have paid if it had been filed on a timely basis. On the other hand, perhaps it WAS filed with the insurer and this is the balance that you are responsible for? Sometimes it takes insurers a long time to pay providers. As for the July 4 deadline, contact the hospital to work out a payment plan; they should be willing to work with you.

Depends on the billing communications you've received from hospital. Dig out your records and check them carefully to ensure there are no errors either at hospital, insurer or your end. Ultimately, it's your responsibility as debtor to ensure creditors are paid. Creditor is at liberty to bill what's owing period. If unpaid, creditor has AN ABUNDANCE of remedies at law to realize the debt. You'll have to initiate queries re verification of amts if/as required - NOT hospital.

Sounds like the hospital made an internal audit and found what seemed to be an unpaid bill. They may be under a limitation to send out the bill within a year of treatment. Take it up with your insurance company - you may have to pay it.

Yes, in Michigan they can. I received one for !300, over a year after the services. I was advised there was nothing I could do but pay.
Sorry.

yes they can. maybe the insurance finally denied it. ask your insurance about it.
