My son ran away and took the car that is in his and my name, what can I do?

He is three months away from being 18 so all the police will do is file a police report(this is reporting him as a runaway).

I do know where he is, at his fathers...not a good place. I am not going to get into all the details of this situation, I just want to know what I can do with the car?? They have hidden the car (him and his father (not biological by the way).

I want it out of my name so I can drop the insurance, CAN I drop the insurance and not be responsible if he gets into a wreck??

File a police report to get the car back. Your son is a minor and he really has no right to the car. Report it as stolen.

Since you are also an owner of the car and carry the insurance on it, you have a right to know where it is. If I were in your shoes, I would confiscate the car, take his name of the title and let him hoof it. And since the man he is with is not his bio dad I would file kidnapping charges, unless he is the adoptive father.

I have a son who turned 18 in November and believe me, since the time he was 15, I had nothing but trouble with him and his dad. I used every tool in my arsenal to make things stick and sometimes that did involve the police and unpleasant drama, however, my son did learn that will not take advantage of me or my good graces. So did my ex.

You CANNOT, however, drop the insurance. If he gets into a wreck, it will be you who pays...certainly not the unbio or non adoptive dad. That would be a very costly mistake.

You have lots of options at your fingertips because he is a minor. Get tough and mean and do not allow this punk ( and yes, I know you love him, I love mine, but he IS a punk) to walk all over you.

And DEMAND the police do their job.

Regardless of what your insurance status or ownership of the car is, you are legally his parent and that makes you legally responsible for him and whatever trouble he gets into until he turns 18. You would be crazy to cancel your insurance now. If he gets into an accident YOU will still be responsible, but you'll just be paying out of your own pocket when the other party involved sues you. Not a smart idea.

If the car is registered in your name, you can drop the insurance immediately - drop the registration on the car. Not only will he be uninsured, but he'll be driving an unregistered car, which is a big no-no if he gets stopped.

Good luck, sounds like a nasty situation.

You can drop him from the insurance...he will just be uninsured and if something happens he will be responsible..but since the car is under your name also..and im assuming you are primary and he is the secondary..you would still be responsible in the event something happens..

Did you go to the fathers? Threaten to tell the police that the father hid the car, but don't tell the police just threaten.

Take your name off the title. That's the most you can do for three months.

You're still responsible for him until 18.
