Would this be illegal.?

To burn my own property, on my own property. Lets say, my house. If I make no false insurance claims, or anything of the sort is it illegal to intentionally burn down my own house. I live in Virginia, if it matters.
*note* I have no intention of doing that, I'm just bored.

In most municipalities these days, at least the more populated ones, it's illegal to burn ANYthing in your yard, even leaves, that might cause a fire to spread or kill someone. People get rid of houses by hiring someone to knock them down.

In fact, this is a point the police make about the 'US Flag burning issue.' There's no need to pass a stricter law making it illegal for patriotic reasons to burn a US flag (such a law would only put the police at greater risk), because local ordnances don't allow you to burn a flag in open places in most towns and cities anyway. Ie., the proper laws are in place.

So no you can't. MAYBE your local fire department will agree to set it on fire and burn it down as a means of training their firemen--I've heard of that being done.

It would still be arson, although perhaps you might be granted permission if you live out in the middle of nowhere with no neighboring houses or trees close enough to catch fire and the fire department stands by. But as a practical matter, unless your house is a rotting mold and bug infested shanty, it would make more sense to let people come and dismantle it in return for getting free building material.

In most states, you have to have a permit to burn things -- you may not be able to get that permit if you have neighbors close-by.

Yes it would still be illegal. You're putting others at harm (intentionally) for one in a long list of other reasons why it would still be illegal.

You would probably have to get permission and have the fire department involved to make sure the fire didn't spread.

I think that might be a public safety hazard.
