18 years old just got my first speeding ticket, what should I do?

I know it was my fault, I was going 64 km on a 40 km zone. I usually do, and everyone else goes 50-60 km/h on this road, but I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I've been driving every single day for year now and I just recieved my first ticket. I heard one speeding ticket will increase your insurance 150 dollars. So I dont know, should I just pay this ticket off or go to court with some excuse to reduce the ticket? I heard if you pay it off quickly which I can do, they will give me back my points and/or it wont have an effect on my insurance. Just plz give me an answer with no hatred that can help me in this situation. Thxxx btw fromm toronto......

Here's a no hatred answer. Going 64km in a 40km zone is criminal. If it's in a residential zone, I, as a judge, would revoke your license for one year.
Pay the fine and stay within the speed limits. If you ever kill a child speeding in a residential zone, you can kiss your life goodbye. Stay cool.

I'm not sure how it is in Canada, but in the US, I suggest everyone go to court.

Sometimes the police don't show up and it gets dismissed, often times the judge will reduce the fine or decide to have it stick for 3 months and then it comes off your record if you don't get another ticket.

I suggest you go to court, tell the judge you were wrong and ask for leniency.

I have only dealt with American courts, but generally if you go in and plead guilty your fine would be reduced, and possibly the points taken off, especially for a first offense.

This might be a bit difficult considering you were going 24km over the speed limit, but you still might get something out of it. I wouldn't try making excuses though - the judge will have heard it all before, and your case probably won't gain any sympathy. Just plead guilty.

If you signed the ticket the wrong way you are screwed. You should sign your ticket ({signature} 1-UCC 207). You can also just write "I decline your contract on the ticket"

I was ticketed a year ago for speeding and I arranged to take a driver's test via the mail in order to erase my ticket and everything that had to do with it. It worked. It cost me several dollars but I have a clean slate.

Just pay it and be done with it. I too have got one. I was driving an Audi TT 3.2 turbo and well, it was just way too easy to get one. And the moment I decided to try the Gs, a police car appears.. Just my luck.

I think you should pay the ticket in full, and stop speeding.

Pay the ticket. Next time go the speed limit.

Shitt Happens, pay the ticket, you'll be fine.
=]

You should learn from your mistakes.

Now what excuse could you make up that the court would believe? Here is one they would really like as in your own words it is true.

"Well I always speed and this day there was a cop there who caught me. This isn't really fair as I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and want to get off as it might put up my insurance premium. I mean judge how could I possibly be responsible for my own actions?" Try this excuse I'm sure it will make them reduce the fine. They might even feel sorry for poor innocent you and let you off altogether.

You weren't just in the wrong place at the wrong time. You were speeding in a 40km/h zone that was there for a good purpose. Was it a school zone where you could kill little kids by speeding or a roadworks zone where you could have killed road workers?

Pay your fine, put up with any extra insurance costs and in future drive responsibly and don't speed.

Well, I'm half Canadian myself, but I only know how it works here down south of you in the US. So I'm going to give you advise assuming that things are similar up in Canada to how it works in the States. But you and I know that it might be very different. But assuming it's the same...

What's always worked for me is to get a lawyer that specializes in traffic tickets. They're usually inexpensive (around $50 US) and end up getting you a deal where you get no points on your license, but you have to pay the speeding ticket and have to go to traffic school (which can be done through a few-hour-long internet course and is fairly inexpensive). But it beats the hell out of a raise on your insurance premiums/costs.

So in a nutshell, my advice is to not go to court yourself, but to get a traffic ticket lawyer. It might not be the same deal up there, but it's worth looking into. It definitely pays for itself.
