If the reason to keep guns at home is protection from intruders, why are so many shot by those they live with?

Very frequently in the news and on crime bio shows, I keep hearing about someone who claimed they bought a gun for self-protection but later killed a loved one for insurance money or over some drama. In some cases, a tragic accident occurred.

You hear it because it's a fairly rare instance and most of these cases involve shady people and drugs or liquor. If you take the criminal on criminal shootings out of the equation and the citizens caught in the crossfire, the murder rate is actually low per 100,000. What you rarely hear are the actual instances when an armed citizen saved his own or someone elses life....there seems to be a bias against that kind of reporting. ..and it happens a lot more than you might believe as in many case the citizen only exhibits the firearm without shooting. These things hardly ever get reported because....where's the 'news'? Even accidental shooting tend to be rare...dramatic for sure, but per 100,000 they're lower than swimming pool drownings or falls off of ladders and roofs. First degree murder, when husband kills wife or wife kills husband using a firearm are another rare situation...does it happen...you bet, but as a rule the shooter is a woman who got tired of being beaten. And gun or no gun, murder is still a murder. Beatings, stabbings, the 'burning bed' business, poison, a shove down the stairs, smothering, strangling and drowning. I read a story once about how a man killed his wife with a bow and arrow....no joke, I ain't makin' it up! It's complex, and a real problem, but given the number of families that own firearms there really aren't that many of these crimes. One is one too many, but let's not make it more than it is. No kiddin'!

because they bought it for defense. but, then someone got a motive to kill an that's exactly what happened.

you need to know what you are doing. you need to teach people how to safely handle weapons. and, then you need to know how to operate safety or clear the gun. if you know what you are doing and don't aim a gun at anything you don't intend to shoot then you won't have an accident. it amounts to carelessness.

That's because it's newsworthy. "If it bleeds, it leads" is a known saying in journalism. The actual numbers looked at statistically are quite small.

Because some people do not use good judgment when handling firearms.
Remember that a gun is always considered loaded, never point one at another person.

I have met similiar kind of problem before, here is the resource that I feel helpful..http://home-insurance.featured-resources...

Alcohol is statistically the causal factor in this situation.
