Can renters in Chicago be required to get renter's insurance?

I've had renter's insurance for as long as I've been renting, so I understand the importance of having it. However, I'm about to move to a new building in Chicago, and I was told that I would need to show proof of renter's insurance before I could move in. I already have insurance, so that part is not an issue, but I do take issue with landlords requiring me to do stuff that I'm legally not required to do. I'm especially irritated when they try to do things that it's not legal for them to require.

Chicago has a pretty good landlord/tenant ordinance that favors renters, but I wasn't able to find anything in it about mandatory renter's insurance. I might have missed something, though. Anyone know?

Thats a good question since renters insurance normally only covers your belongings and not the building. I don't see a legal reason why it should be mandatory.

I am fairly sure they can require it. They cannot violate things in law, such as race/age/sex based discrimination.

But requireing insurance is not discrimination. It sounds like a good buisness practice, especialy since its so cheap.

(Our renters insurance actualy aves up money. Example. Our car insurance was $100 a month, but after picking up renter insurance, we got a multi discount that lowered the total for both down to $95)

As part of a renter's agreement, yes.
