A question about rent a center?

my bestfriend got screwed over hardcore by rent a center. she had insurance on all the stuff she got from them so if she ever lost her job it would be covered. well she got layed off and they told her that they would file the claim for her insurance which they did but told her that bc her previous employer wouldnt fill out the paper work there was nothin they could do. she had been paying on her stuff for over a year and was never late. now they bc her insuance didnt go through they want the stuff back (even though she can pay for it without her job) they said there is no way she can pay to keep it. if she decides to tell them to **** off what can they do about it? can she go to jail? or will it just go against her credit?

also what happens if they come to take the stuff back and she doesnt let them in?

The insurance your friend is talking about is the benifits Plus Insurance, and it is true that they can not submit the claim without her former employer's cooperation. Rent A Center does not care how you pay for the merchandise, as long as you pay, and somewhat on-time. They would never tell someone "there is no way she can pay to keep it". She won't go to jail, but they can take you to court. RAC is becoming much more aggresive in their court actions against stolen property. The judge will take into consideration how much you have paid, but a judgment will go against you 99% of the time. You will also be submitted into a system that will go on your credit and you will never be able to rent anything from any rental company again. It is not worth it, they are offering your friend an out by allowing you to return it and be done, Return it. Your friend does not own the property, RAC does. Just because she could not uphold her end of the contract does not make it right to steal.

your friend needs to get her old employers to fill in the forms so that the insurance goes through. Otherwise the rent a centre have rights over the items she has with her. If she decides to tell them she will not return the items then she will be liable for breach of contract. Jail will not be an outcome, but yes, debt and so bad credit may be on the cards. I advise she talks with the insurance company and her previous employers to rectify the problem. Informing the rent a centre may make them give her more time to sort the insurance out! hope it helps =)
