Question about controlled substance prescriptions? |
If you fill a prescription and the doctor writes a script for the same meds earlier than 30 days, why can you not get it filled until the 30 days is up? Is there a law that says this? Here in SC they won't fill it even if you want to pay for it out of pocket and not use insurance. Is it different elsewhere? North Carolina? How do they even know when you go to a different pharmacy? I know this is more than one question. Thanks on advance. the problem is that I have over a week left before the 30 days is up and don't have a weeks supply left. I've been taking this med for over a year and this is the first time this has happened. When I asked the pharmacy for an early refill they said it was against the law. I don't get it, if the dr. wrote the script early, why can't they fill it? Because they are only allowed to dispense a 30 day supply once every 30 days. Of course, if you are really that desperate, take the second script to a different pharmacy to have it filled. If you pay cash, it would be very difficult to track it. Federal law says absolutely nothing about how soon after the previous fill you can get a new one. In practice, most pharmacies will fill a new control once you get within a week or so of the old prescription running out. The law does allow a pharmacist to dispense controls at any time. Federal law limits the supply of controlled substances to 30 days. because the law assumes you are a dealer |
