Should companies have the right to fire people who smoke?

Should companies have the right to refuse to hire people who smoke?

Should companies have the right to charge more for health insurance for employees who smoke ?

No.
No.
No. Most companies have a group rate that applies regardless of the staff members' individual heath or lifestyle situations. The company pays what it pays in insurance, and charging the smokers more when their premiums don't actually cost more makes my legal sense tingly.

Yes, yes, and yes.

We're talking private businesses here. They should have the right to do anything they want to do, just like employees should have the right to quit or refuse employment if they don't like it.

Smoking isn't even in the Constitution. Religious freedom is, and I'd support the right of an employer to refuse to hire someone who insists on being allowed to pray for five minutes every hour on the hour, or ostentatiously wear some symbol of their religion.

I think employers have a right to tell employees what they may and may not wear. You must wear a tie, you can't wear a tee shirt with profanity on it, you must keep your hair neat, no beards or mustaches, no visible piercings, yada yada yada.

They have and should have the ability to fire people who smoke at the job if they choose to do so. Most don't for obvious reasons.

And yes companies have the right to put forward health care screenings that adjusts the employee price.
