Can a landlord sue for damanges after an apartment fire?

MY father had an apartment fire over a year ago and we just got the letter that the landlord was suing for 33K. The fire was caused because of a faulty stove (that's what we all think, offiical word is unknown). Don't apartment communties have insurance to cover stuff like that? He lived there a week so we didnt have renters ins.... but can he be sued for that?

anyone can sue for anything... just like the lady who spilt coffee on her lap and sued mcdonalds because of her mistake...
they should have insurance, but there are plenty that do not..
unless they can prove the fire was your fathers fault, the suing will not hold up in court...

Always always report and record any faulty equipment or poor standards in private rented accomodation. You can get these parasitic ghouls dancing on a hot tin roof when you know housing and environmental health law well. Toss the letter in the bin and call their bluff.

NO, the official reason is unknown, meaning that it can't be proved that it's your fathers fault, also if it was caused by a faulty stove, you should be the one suing.

sure landlord can sue, but anyone can sue anyone in america, file a counter suit for property lost due to faulty stove of landlords

no because it was an accident, and if it was caused by the faulty stove then its the landlords fault
but you can counter sue
