Was quoted for more work than needs to be done to fix the car I scratched. Is this extortion?

My daughter accidentally scrached a car in the parking lot. We've noticed that the car she hit has other damages too. We want to settle outside the insurance for obvious reasons, but the owner of the car insists on a certain shop to fix the dameges. The copy of the quote we've got includes repairs and replacements to the whole car, in my opinion in excess of 1K at least. How do I deal with this?

Either pay for it or turn it in to insurance. There really isnt a lot you can do. Then again, did you give them your insurance info? If they dont have it, I wouldnt worry a great deal about. Did you get pictures of the damage that was already there and what was done by your daughter?

I was in the same position when I was 17. I put a half inch long barely noticable scratch on a mustang. My parents didnt want it on the insurance, and they wanted the entire panel replaced since there was already damaged, and wouldnt settle for less. My dad talked to a lawyer and we were told its either pay them what they want and get a notorized statement that the damage was paid for in full or let the insurance handle. My parents being as they are paid what they were asking, and then made me pay them back every penny - about 2000 total.
Worst part - mustang belonged (or was being driven by) a 16 yr old snot who totalled it 6 months later! (small community.. the kids aunt worked with my mom)

Tell him you refuse to pay that amount. Make him a fair offer.

If he sues you in small claims, they will only make you pay for the scratch, not the rest of the stuff.

Why two postings same question????

And who cares if it is extortion????? Pay or don't pay. Your daughter damaged the car, you decided not to go through insurance, deal with the consequences.

either you pay or tell your insurance company about it

HAve the scratch done by your guy, not theirs.
