Is our government getting out of hand with laws that limit personal freedom? Laws such as helmet laws and...?

seat belt laws and insurance laws. I understand that they lower rates for everyone but what if people don't want to utilize any of them. Isn't the choice to use them a lifes choice similar to Abortion. I am aware how different they are but it is still about choice and freedom. In my opinion people have twisted the constitution in both directions to take freedoms away.

Has government oversteps it proper and enumerated functions? Yes it has.

Helmet Law, Seat Belt laws, Law on Thermometers, light bulbs all are violations of private property rights.

But Liberals do not like to be responsible for themselves -- they want to make everyone responsible for everyone else.

Do the economics on insurance --- People without insurance drive every day --- if they get in a wreck --- your insurance pays for it (along with everyone Else's insurance). So a portion of your premium is inflated by these deadbeats --- who know that you are paying encourages more to game the system.

Insurance (auto and health) ought to be based on individuals transactions ---- If I am health and keep fit and stay with one carrier --- I should be able to have low premiums. But if I have to pay for people who wear Tee shirt denote the Blood Cholesterol of 308 --- I do not have much hope.

The way to stop these laws is to write your critters in Congress and State Legislatures and tell them to stop buying your vote with your freedom and your neighbors money.

Just say NO.

I wouldn't disagree with you that people should have the right to freedom. However, choice and freedom are not unlimited.

The cliche is that the privilege to swing your fist ends at my nose. I think that could be extended into the privilege to drive (a car or motorcycle) any way you want to ends when I have to pay the taxes to absorb medical bills that would have been greatly reduced by use of a seatbelt or helmet, or when I must absorb the cost of an accident not my fault because of your lack of insurance.

As the globe gets more crowded, the limits of freedom are (and should be) more and more circumscribed IMVHO. The trick is to know how much is appropriate.

But YMMV. You have a valid point.

OK time for someone to actually think before they post questions like this.

1. In order to operate a motor vehicle on a public highway you are required to have a drivers license (yes there are a few exceptions)

2. Since you are required to have a license issued by a government agency this means it is a privilege and definitely not a right.

3. Since we have established that operating a motorcycle or and automobile on a public highway is a privilege the Government can and does have a few requirements that must be met for you to legally operate that motor vehicle on that public highway. Those requirements are have insurance, wear a seat belt or wear a helmet.

4. Since there is no constitutional RIGHT to drive said motor vehicle on a public highway you either obey the rules or you pay the price.

Sorry but someone had to explain the obvious to you.

most laws are written in blood

somebody had to die before it became a law to begin with

It is simple - the larger the government, the more it infringes on your freedoms. You are correct. "people (politicians) have twisted the constitution in both directions to take freedoms away."

I am personally tired of the "it is for their own good" laws. I, as are most of the voting public, am capable of deciding what is good for me. I admit the majority of the voting public is as dumb as a sack of rocks. That is why they believe the line of garbage the politicians feed them; however, most people do know what is good for them.

to Roadhazz.....
good post, but all this does not change the fact that government is constantly chipping away at our freedoms and sticking its nose into places which are not sanctified by the constitution.

yes i totally agree. if some people dont want car insurance they shouldnt HAVE 2 have it. its a risk they are willing 2 take if something happens THEY lose and should have known the consequences. the government/the rich in power just want 2 make more easy money off us regular people. they are trying 2 run our lives while letting us think we are free. like the new law where you cant smoke in a car with a child. every1 is different. in my opinion i wouldnt smoke around a child but 2 other smokers they might not care if their kid grows up 2 smoke which they probably will anyways. the government is just making A LOT of one sided rules. they dont know both worlds so they cant have any idea how well their plans will work. i miss the old days. im only 19 and i know all this. after my generation the world is all screwed up
