What help can i get from the government if a child was just given to me?

Well my sister-in-law just had a baby and is a single parent she says she cant do it by her self right now. She is willing to give the baby to us and as soon as she gets a job and car will get the baby back. What will the government help us with as far as insurance for the baby and food for us and the baby and will the father have to pay child support to us

Get yourself licensed as a foster parent for this child. You should be able to get a stipend and some medical insurance for the child.

Nothing. You are choosing to take the child, good for you, but the government isn't there to take care of the costs of bringing up a child, that's the parent's problem.

Whether you sister-in-law hands over any child support to you is up to an agreement between you. The father may very well dispute any child support if his g/f isn't actually caring for the child, but there would be no provision for him to pay it to you, you don't have legal rights to the child.

Ok, let's be realistic here.... If I were you I would talk to sister in law about staying with you and your hubby and you will be there to assist her, so that she's not alone. As a single parent of 4, IT CAN BE DONE....
She can go back to school, work, and get food stamps and medicaid on child to assist her UNTIL she gets back on her feet.
If she just leaves baby with you, then you will be able to collect child support from BOTH parents. If you are left with baby, you can call CPS and they can assist you with paperwork to keep child in your care, but she will have to prove to them that she is capable of taking child back later. But as a mom, and raising or caring for a child it will break your heart to let the child just go after caring for them for any amount of time. You can go and legally adopt the child or like someone else said, become a foster parent.

Best to get sis in law to stay and help her with baby. She can do this alone with a little love and support to get her started.

What you are saying spells trouble, BIG trouble.
I agree with the above statements they are all viable.
But will add this. That baby is not a doll, that can be played with and then set aside.
This is a lifetime responsibility. To one or the other of you. What happens if you and you husband get attached ot this child and all of a sudden like when baby is in school and they want to disrupt her/his life and take the child to a different school. What About the child's feelings? All of a sudden it's got to choose between you and the real parents.

If you seriously want this baby do it legally, ADOPT, and then bear the responsibility of it's medical and well being. Other than that my opinion is this kid ain't got a chance with you or your sister in law

Is it the government's baby? I'm confused.

Your sister in law can apply for whatever benefits she may be elegible for, but unless you LEGALLY have custody or guardianship over the baby, you are entitled to nothing.

This is a bad situation...she is "willing" to give you the baby? You are looking for handouts? Call child services.

No, the government is not the baby's daddy, and it is not your daddy.
If you are taking this child, you had better be able to take care of it with your income and some child support from the baby's father.

If you can't take care of it why are you taking the baby? Why should the government have a responsibility to help you?
