Child life insurance? |
My son took out a 5k dollar life insurance policy on his son when his son was born. The mother of the child has all the paperwork for the insurance policy. My son has not seen his son in 3 years because of fighting with the child's mother. The child was a newborn when he last saw him, but we were informed today that the boy was killed in an automobile accident last month. The mother never notified my son of the child's passing because she says since there was no child support order and my son didn't have contact she didn't think we cared. Is my son legally entitled to half of the life insurance policy? The beneficiary on the policy at the time was the mother and father, but could she have changed it without notifying my son? I ask because she claims she still owes 3k dollars on the child's funeral and wants my son to pick up the tab, but I have to wonder where the life insurance went if she couldn't afford to bury the child. your Grandson has passed away, you didn't get to know him.. and your worried about the money instead of mourning the loss of a child.. Contact the insurance policy holder. First of all, I am sorry for your loss. I know how it feels to loose a child. To answer your question, no she could have changed the policy unless she was given sole custody of the child by the court. But also consider that it cost me over $6000 to bury my son, whom I lost 3 years ago. So your son paid no child support for 3 years.. he didn't offer any kind of emotional support for the child.. didn't give Mom a weekend without the boy- nothing? Now, you're all up in arms over 3k dollars she wants him to pay in funeral expenses? The average funeral in the United States costs $6,500, according to the National Funeral Directors Association. The true sum can easily reach $10,000 once a burial plot, flowers and other costs are included, the AARPsays. The owner of the life insurance policy can choose who is the beneficiary of the policy. |
