Medical Insurance/Billing Question?

so today i got a letter from my hosipital informing me that my insurance is not paying something because i am not covered. i recently went in for a xray and thought nothing of it, so i call and find out that on 11/5/07 my old insurance company called the hospital and demanded money back from a claim they paid for me back in 5/10/05 because i was not covered. so the hospital wants their money from me. i am almost certain that i was covered. at that particular time i had quit either the week before 5/10/05, on that week, or the week after. i am again pretty certain that i made sure that i was covered before going in to get blood work. i also remember that my work sent me something during that time saying they will give me a 30day period and then i would be dropped or i could do the COBRA option which i choose not to do. i of course don't have these records since i assumed you only keep medical payments, ultility bills for 1 years time. Can they do this? What are my rights? Thanks to all!

i contacted my old work to obtain my hire and termination date and was unable to reach them and am currently emailing them. i figured if they say i was covered on that day then my insurance company made a booboo. is this legal though-what rights do i have. this is going to be a nightmare! the outstanding debt is over $1000...i had a comp. blood work done along with a mri.

Most medical claims have a statute of limitations of 2 years. Check your state law regarding this. If the insurance company is just now catching that after two years, I'm sure that is in excess of any contractual obligation. Most of the time this is done within a 12 month period.

you will need to take this up with your insurance's claims department. best of luck.
