200 dollars if you cant offord your insurance?

I live in CT and in oct of last year my ex wife crashed my car. My insurance went from 120 a month to 460 (go geico) I had just come off active duty in the army and I couldnt offord the insurance for 1 month so it was canceled and I went 1 month with out insurance before i found new insurance. The state is now charging me $200 FOR HAVING A LAPSE IN INSURANCE COVERAGE is there anyway to get out of paying

now you know not to lend out your car. ...so last month you saved $120 by not paying insurance you normally would have. you are whining about 80 bucks. What will happen if I drop insurance on a vehicle or have a lapse of coverage?

Whenever insurance coverage is cancelled, the DMV is notified by the insurance company and the registrant is mailed a Warning Notice offering the opportunity to enter into a consent agreement, obtain insurance, and pay a fine of $200. By doing so, no further action will be taken against the registrant as long as insurance is maintained.

What if I don't respond to the notice?

Failure to comply with the warning notice will result in the mailing of a Suspension Notice. At that time, a hearing may be requested. An adverse decision following an administrative hearing will result in:

Suspension of registration
Loss of all privileges to renew or register ANY motor vehicle

Were you driving when you didn't have insurance? If not, you may have an argument, but it will be very difficult to prove. If you were, you're out of luck. Next time be careful.

You should really try esurance. The same thing happened to me and they were able to beat everyone's quotes by at least $400. Now we only pay $140/month for full coverage on 2 vehicles.

Did you place your vehicle in a non-operating status or did you drive it? If you drove it, then you did so knowing you weren't covered...call that $200 your premium for the month and forget about it. In CA you can go to jail and have your car impounded for no insurance.

If by "the state is now charging me" you mean you've been issued a citation, you may demand a trial and with the help of a good attorney, you may be able to produce a good result. Of course the lawyer may cost you more than the $200, so if dollars are your primary motivation, you may be stuck representing yourself. If you are in financial tuff straights, you may be elligible for a public defender.
