Domestic partner and insurance question?

I am trying to recieve Aetna insurance through my job, they allow you to cover a same sex partner under domestic partner section but they dont allow you to cover the opposit sex unless you are married....shouldnt you be able to cover a person of the opposit sex under the domestic partner section being that domestic partner isnt defined as always being the same sex......im just getting a little fustrated and confused ive been with my boyfriend for five years and I cant cover him under my insurance unless we get married but I can cover any woman without even having to prove if I know her....If anyone has any information on this, any loop holes please let me know....Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

A domestic partner can be either sex. I, as well as someone I work with, have our opposite sex significant others under our Aetna insurance as domestic partners (my boyfriend of 3 years). You do have to prove that they have been living with you (very easy to do). Ask your human resources/benefits person about adding a domestic partner and they can give you all of the necessary information and forms you need to submit. You do not have to register with the state for anything, in regards to the post before mine. All I did was asked my HR lady for the forms to add a domestic partner onto my insurance, she gave them to me, told me the requirements, I did it, and he's been on my insurance for a year now.

You cannot just cover any random same-sex person. You need to have an officially recognized domestic partnership registered with the state, just like a marriage.
