Liability insurance for a small cabinet shop, is there an alternative? |
We have 3 full time employees and 1 part time. They are working with some rather dangerous equipment. Couldn't I draw up a contract for the employees to sign stating that they assume the risk and responsibility of injury associated with the job? I would have it notarized. Would this be helpful in preventing a law suit for personal injury incurred on our property by our employees? We checked into getting the insurance and it would cost us almost $6000.00 dollars a year. We simply can not afford that. It would be completely ineffective. You cannot "contract away" your liability for your employees' acts or omissions. Moreover, contrary to common belief you cannot turn employees into "contractors" by having them sign a contract. You cannot contract your way out of worker's compensation. If a business with 3.5 employees cannot afford $6,000 a year in insurance it can't afford employees or it can't afford to be in business. |
