Car Stolen and recovered, insurance still need police report?

Hi all,

My car was stolen in December 07 and I was sooo please when I received a call from the police to say that it was recovered last Monday. Since then it has been in the car pound having forensic tests. I am ready to collect it on Wednesday but my insurance say that they will not pay for any work until the police report comes through. The police say that the report usually takes up to 40 days and mine is at 34 days and it still hasnt come through yet. I spoke to my insurance who dont really seem that bothered about it and say I should chase the police for it.

I need to know if this procedure is correct and if its not what I can do about it. I just really want my car back to the way it was before it was stolen!

Does anyone have any advice please???

Thank you
xx

Ask the police for the incident number and the name and badge number of the officer dealing with it.

Give your insurance company all that info along with the relevant phone number for the police station and tell them to get on with it.

I've recently been jerked around by my former insurance company. So far as I can gather, they're pretty much all the same. If you need something done, they won't get off their rears to do it if they think you can do it for them.

I hope you get this sorted soon, then bin the miserable b*stards. Try ECar insurance, you know the one's, they've got the Michael Winner ads. I'm with them now and thus far they're proving to be much better than the previous lot.

Call your insurance company and tell them that you will no longer be a customer of theirs if they do not treat you like the honest person that you are.
It may not work and you might need to change insurance company, but if enough people follow through with the threats then they will listen eventually.

This is correct. It is unlikely they will proceed with repairs until they have the police report or at least notification that the car was definately stolen. However, this wont stop them preparing to settle the claim by seeing estimates for repair and sending an engineer or assessor to see the damage. Ask them if they are prepared to do that. You can also ask the police if they have a preliminary report or crime sheet to fax to your insurers or a crime number. This may speed things up a little.
