Should we here in the uk abolish road tax / insurance?

when i say abolish , lets look at alternate ways to pay these over the top prices, i do not mean actually get rid of insurance either but come up with better and more affordable ways of paying these .
young drivers in a number of cases are having to pay more for their insurance than the value of the vehicle they are trying to buy, and a lot of them need a car so end up with a car with no insurance this does seem very unfair on them, and forces our premiums up at the same time, either way everyone loses.
in the case of road tax this is beginning to be one of the biggest rip offs for motorists and is supposed to help pay towards the costs of road repairs, if this is the case what happens to the money from speeding / parking fines etc, and the roads are a mess, what do you think

Road Tax and Insurance should be scrapped and the cost put onto the price of fuel. Doing it this way not only means everyone is paying but also ensures those people with gas guzzlers are paying more for the privilege.

Don't abolish insurance. The increased premiums after a crash act as a deterrant and encourage people to drive more safely. As regards road tax, yes I agree, it should be part of council tax.

No to abolish insurance, though it is high, I wish it was lower :) but it does the job unlike road tax which is a waste of time now and they should have an alternative to this, I'm surprised they have not changed the tax disc of road tax yet as the police just check the number plates to see what tax etc it has. and do walking policemen actually look at the tax discs on every car still?????

Road tax should be put on the cost of fuel so the more you use the road the more tax you pay.

I think it's less than 20% of road tax is actually spent on road maintenance.

As for insurance the prices are a rip-off but we can't be without it.

Sure abolish it and then drive on the roads that the rest of the world uses. What jumblat.

They should put fuel prices up by 50p/ litre and abolish tax. then the people who drive "Guzzlers" and/or drive long distances will pay more in road tax!! the little old lady who drives once a week to Asda and to visit her grandchildren will not suffer they will be better off.. As for the insurance, young people who pay more for insurance than the value of the car is not really the case in hand, insurance is for the people they might injure. eg a 拢300 car can cause disablement to lets say a 24 year old male married with 2 children.... think how much the insurance would have to pay out to him till he reached retirement age!!! Whiplash claims I think would amount to 拢1000 per person in the car !! So sorry I can't think of a better way.

Britain should become a tax free country , it is small enough and the government has made enough money off us in taxes since before i can remember . the idea of paying road tax was for the upkeep of the roads we use which was fair enough i think , but now it is a government pocket filler ! insurance is a necessity though , it should be capped at a limit of say 拢1000 for young new drivers but after no claims should drop at least by half , i do think these people with large engine cars for example , people who have cars with 3/4/5/6 litre engine sizes (and there is just no need for them other than a status symbol ).these people should be punished for their cars, any thing larger than say 2.2 is just not needed , unless it is a heavy good or agricultural vehicle .

No i don't think they we would want them to, because they will only use it as an opportunity to charge us even more.

Insurance is a multi-national multi-billion dollar industry in itself. The politicos have come up with many fairer options and they will never see light of day. Let off steam if you want but premiums will go up every year regardless of the value of your banger. It is because there are people who really think that these moneys are being collected for the common good.

I think if you pay Road Tax, why should you have to pay extra for car parking in certain places?

And as for insurance, I think it should be optional. Of course we all know it makes sense to have insurance, but if you dont, then you just have to pay it out of your own pocket.

Road tax is anachronistic, unfair and dishonest. More than 80% of the cost of fuel in the UK is tax. In addition we have to pay road tax and tolls on many roads. And what do we get for our money? Bad roads and illegal wars in far off places. We have a government of incompetent meddlers...
