Issue with a car insurance settlement due to vehicle theft?

My Dodge Intrepid was stolen in front of my house and found missing parts and vandalized one week later. The insurance company said my car was fixable with only $1800 of damage. Then 4 days later they called and said they found more damage and it was totaled. They told me to come pick up a check for 3,000. However the bluebook value on my car is $5,500. I also lost a new Sony Xplod Stereo and about 50 cds. My agent says my stereo system doesn't effect the settlement. Why is their such a difference between the blue book value and their offer? Why am I not getting reimbursed for the items stolen out of my car? What can I do to raise the offer?

In most states stereo equiptment is not part of the car unless installed (i.e. cd players usually installed, 15 inch speaker boxes don't count, usuall, even if "nailed down"). Your CD player, if installed, should be covered, your CDs willl not be covered, however they are covered under your home owners insurance policy if you have one.
If you are not happy with your settlement don't cash the check, and demand more. If the ins. company refuses you can seek a "first-party bad faith attorney".
Lesson to learn, don't have 50 CD in your car.

You don't have to agree with the settlement. Set up a meeting with the adjuster and ask how they came up with the price. Blue book is retail and wholesale. Sounds like they used wholesale. Ask them to find a car like yours in comparable shape and buy it for you.
