Do you think that the government ought to put a cap on car insurance ,and the prices they charge since its law |
car insurance is at rediculous rates. government says everyone has to have it , and insurance companies are making it almost impossible to afford. I have a wife and 2 kids we have to have 2 vehicles. but i can't afford the insurance on either one of them. now i'm breaking a law. what does anyone else think. Insurance is a pool. When an accident happens, money is taken out of the pool. The reason why insurance rates go up is because people get into accidents. Governments (state) mandate how much money insurance companies can make on the premiums (that's why Geico can only say "We can save you UP TO 20% on car insurance," and not "We can save you up to 100% on car insurance." Insurance is one of the most highly regulated industry. The insurance companies aren't to blame, bad drivers and low licensing standards are. There is a cap on auto insurance rates - by law. It just happens not to seem reasonable to most of the paying public. insurance rates are based on certain formulas, and to cap them would put insurance out of business. in canada its part of the gas tax...so the more you drive the more you pay... One of the reasons insurance of all kinds is so expensive is BECAUSE of government interference. The free market would permit better competition and we'd see rates tumble. I think insurance is out of hand myself. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing to have or anything, but I am 27 years old and I have been driving since I was 16 so that is 11 years that I have had insurance coverage. In that 11 years, I have had one accident (thank God there haven't been more) and that was ruled as not being my fault because the lady pulled out in front of me and she was turning in my direction. I think there should be some kind of law that if you go so long without an accident then you should get some of your premiums back, like a tax refund at the end of the year. That way, the ones that are driving recklessly all the time end up paying for their carelessness instead of someone like me who doesn't drive with their head up their a$$ all the time. The key to lower car insurance is the type of car you drive, the distance you drive it if you use it to commute to work and in what area, your age, driving record, anti-theft devices, automatic seat belts, and taking a safe driving course. There are a few other items that help or hinder, but those are the majority. Yes If they make it a law then they should put a cap on it so everyone can afford it. Maybe you should get a petition started and contact your Governor. They are capped and regulated in all states. Insurance companies generally must report any time they change rates and the reason. One must remember that while the $1000-2000 most will pay a year in insurance seems high, one accident alone can cost $20000 and that's assuming no injuries. Also remember that you are pooling money with others to edge the bet if you are in an accident. If they're in one, money is pulled from the pool to pay for it. If everyone didn't pay then when it came time for a payout because of your accident there might not be anything there. |
