Do American doctors ever defy orders from insurance companies and treat patients they are told to turn away?

I am a Canadian and I am wondering how things work in the US. I've seen Michael Moore's Sicko and was wondering if doctors ever go against orders from insurance companies that instruct them to refuse treatment or to turn them away to different hospitals.

Thank you! I'm really curious about this - does anyone know of any doctors losing their positions in hospitals or being disciplined for this?

No joke...Ron Paul was known to do that. Actually he delivered babies for free many times. Shows you his honesty and compassion.

all the time . . . they just don't get paid

Insurance companies don't tell doctors not to treat people - they just agree or decline to pay. Michael Moore is an idiot and Hollywood garbage is not reality.

Insurance companies don't have the power to order doctors not to treat someone. The only power they have is not to pay a claim for services they do not approve. If you can afford your treatment you can pay for it yourself. Hospitals usually turn people away if they don't expect to be paid.
