Are landlords in AZ responsible for checking the immigration status of prospective renters? SS card needed? |
I'm a landlord, and I can't find any documentation on this issue. My understanding is that you do not need a SS card, just a photo id. The immigration status of the renter is between them and the government. I just need to document this. No -- I live in Arizona, and people don't have to show a Social Security card. They can have other ID used to prove who they are, but not that they belong here. Nowhere does a rental agreement ask about immigration status. However, if you are asking because you are an illegal immigrant cnsidering moving here, please don't. We really do have enough here. i am in az myself. And the places that we have went to rent or whatever i belive they ask for our id and ss card. i would just in case though. There are very strict laws here now in az so i would. But the problem with that is who knows the illegals might have fake ss cards to so that wouldnt be your problem cause u wouldnt be able to tell if it was fake or not I don't remember which, but some city (Or county, maybe?) in Arizona passed a local ordinance requiring landlords to check immigration status, but the courts said it was illegal, as that's a Federal responsibility. |
