What about San Francisco becoming a "Sanctuary City" and refusing to obey U.S. immigration laws?

Should San Francisco's mayor, who has declared this stance, be arrested and charged with violation of Federal law? I do recall that the Federal government had no mercy for Southern states which seceded in 1861 and declared themselves exempt from Federal law.

If the city doesn't obey federal laws then it should get no federal funding.

And the mayor should be held accountable. He cannot unilaterally declare that his city is exempt from federal laws. That shows an arrogance that can only come out of Californian liberals. If he sticks to it, invade and put down what is in effect a rebellion. It makes me wonder how much he gets in kick backs from illegal immigrants? He has to be corrupt to be so stupid.

I say let them do what they want, just yank all federal funding that the city gets. Not 1 more penny to them. Let them wallow in that. Also no bailouts ever for the city when they are bankrupt.

this wont last, Cali is going to get in big trouble with the big boys with their Pot smoking, no plastic bags, caring about the environment these guys are out of control.

There is a difference between obeying the law and enforcing the law. Immigration is the jurisdiction of the federal government, not the city. It can increase the costs to a city to detain and house illegal aliens. If the federal government isn't going to reimburse the city then why should the pay for it?

This will go to the Supreme Court more than likely where the Bush puppets will ensure a win.

So you don't have to get your panties in a wad over this.

SF is the most progressive city in America. People in SF are smart, tolerant, educated, from many different nations, and friendly; you know...the polar opposite of cons.

How about San Francisco just secede from the union by breaking off and falling into the sea?

There is not much accounting for what happens in this beautiful old city. It is now full of liberals which makes it very strange and scary.

Hello There!

I think this is a great idea, and I think that New York City should join San Francisco! New York City would stand a better chance of prevailing in a court of law because they have the UN there.

For many, many decades New York City did not enforce the immigration laws and it was a very wonderfull, pleasant place to live. Now the Feds have gone all Nazi on us and are trying to divide the nation by pitting us against each other. The flavor of this current political climate is 'illegal immigrants'. Give me a break!

Over the course of my life, I have seen all kinds of different groups targeted by politicos to try to twist the populace. .. this is just another manuever that will hurt many innocent people. Who are the innocent people in this situation, you may ask? The people that know and love any illegal immigrant! The children of illegal immigrants that were born here! And the taxpaying citizens of this country because we aren't giving all the workers in this country the opportunity to pay taxes.

Who does it help? Wacko Politicians who prey on the basic undercurrent in the American people's personality. . . to feel like they are better than somebody else.

Honor the Mayor of San Francisco for his bold stand. Why should the taxpayers of San Francisco pay for anything regarding the enforcement of the laws against the illegal immigrants? The Federal Government is in charge of that, and the should be the ones working on it and paying for it out of the Federal Budget. Should the citizens of any city have to PAY TWICE for the same service? I think not.

IF the Federal Government is so concerned about illegal immigration, they should stop it at the BORDERS and entry ports. . . .that is there job! This is not the job of some poor city work in San Francisco. San Francisco has enough of it's own local problems to take care of!

I don't think the Federal Government has the stones to arrest him (I think that would be a good start). The next best thing would be to cut off all federal funding, not exactly the most Constitutional answer but then again the Federal Government has no business giving a city money in the 1st place.

Yes, I would arrest him.

but no one will.

Political correctness has taken over. I fear for our country.

This coming out of any other city, it would have surprised me. But not SF. They just can't be wacky enough. They need to get rid of all those old hippies, get off the dope and try thinking with a clear head for once. It's enlightening!
